Authentic Hot and Sour Soup - Sichuan Style w/ Poached Fish and Pickled Mustard Greens - (酸菜鱼)

Today we are making Suan Cai Yu [酸菜鱼], which is Sichuan spicy poached fish with pickled mustard greens. I know it doesn’t sound appetizing but it is my all-time favorite Sichuan dish. It has a very unique spicy, sour, numbing, and thick fish broth. It is Very popular all over China but not well-known outside of China. If you are not Chinese and you know about this dish, your Chinese friend will be impressed.


- 1000 grams of white fish (500 grams of fish meat and 500 grams of fish bones)


- 500 grams of fish meat slices
- 1 tsp salt
- Some white pepper to taste
- 1 tbsp Chinese cooking wine [Amazon Link:]
- 1 tsp ginger juice
- 1 egg white
- 1/2 tbsp of cornstarch


- 500 grams of fish bones (rub it with 1/2 tsp of salt, 3 tbsp of Chinese cooking wine, 1 tbsp of cornstarch . Then rinse it with running water several times )
- 2.5 tbsp of oil to brown the fishbone
- 5 cloves of garlic
- 2 pieces of scallion
- 1 inch of ginger
- 1.2 liter of hot water


- 2.5 tbsp of oil
- 4 cloves of garlic
- 4 slices of ginger
- 500 grams of Pickled Mustard Greens/ Suan Cai/ 酸菜 [Amazon Link:]
- 6-10 pieces of pickled chilies [Amazon Link:]
- the fish broth that we made
- the fish meat slices that we marinade before
- some salt to taste


- 3 tbsp of oil
- 1/3 cup of red dry chilies  [Amazon Link:]
- 1.5 tbsp of sichuan peppercorn [Amazon Link:]
- Diced garlic and scallion


- You can use any type of white fish for this recipe. Fillet the fish and slice the fish meat into 1/4 of an inch thick pieces. With a 45 degrees angle. Don’t slice it too thin or else it will fall apart while pouching. Season the fish meat with 1 tsp of salt, 1 tbsp of Chinese cooking wine, 1 tsp of ginger juice, 1 egg white, some white pepper to taste and 1/2 tbsp of cornstarch. Mix everything until the cornstarch is well combined. Set it in the fridge for 30 minutes.

- Chopped the fish bones into short pieces. We will use it to make the fish broth. Rub the fish bones with a 1/2 tsp of salt, 3 tbsp of Chinese cooking wine, and 1 tbsp of cornstarch for a few minutes. Rinse everything off with running water several times until the cornstarch is gone and the water is clean. This step helps to remove some unpleasant fishy smell. Drain the water completely.

- Heat up your wok, add some oil. Be generous with the amount. Toss the wok. Throw in some garlic, ginger, scallion. Stir them until fragrant. Toss in the fish bones. Adjust them so every piece is touching the bottom of the wok. Let it fry for a few minutes. We want to brown the fish a little bit. Then pour in 1.2 liters of boiling hot water. Hot water helps to release the protein from the fish bones. Don’t use cold water or else your fish broth will come out thin and bland. Cover it and turn the heat to low. Let it simmer for 40 minutes.

- While waiting, let’s prepare the pickled mustard green (Suan Cai /酸菜), it is a type of pickled cabbage, really crunchy and delicious. You can buy it on Amazon. Just simply slice them and set it aside. I also like to use some pickled face heaven chilis. They are super spicy. Cut them open to release the flavor.

- The fish broth has been simmered for 40 minutes now. Drain it and set it aside.

- Heat up the wok again, add more oil. Then toss in some ginger and garlic. Along with the pickled face heaven chilies and the pickled mustard greens. Stir them on medium heat for about 4-5 minutes. Then pour the fish broth back into the wok. Bring this to a boil and let it cook for about 5 minutes so you can transfer some of the distinctive sour pickle taste from the vegetables to the broth. At this point, you can taste it. Pickled mustard green usually is very salty so you only need s a little bit of salt. But you do need to adjust it base on your own situation since the different brand of pickles has a different level of saltiness.

- Take all the pickles out. Put it in a big bowl. Keep the broth boiling. Add in the fish. It will drop down the temperature a little bit. Use the spatula to push the fish so they don’t stick together. Be gentle, you don’t want to break the fish meat. Bring this to a slight simmer, not a full boil or else you will overcook the fish. Turn off the heat and pour everything into the big bowl as well.

- Sprinkle some diced garlic and scallion on the top. Add more oil to the wok, along with some red dry chilies and some Sichuan peppercorns. Toast them until the oil is hot. I know I used a lot of oil in this dish. That is just the way how Sichuan food is. You can use less oil if you prefer. Pour the oil, chilies, Sichuan peppercorns on to the fish. It will activate all the aroma, which makes the dish smells fantastic. And you are done. Enjoy!

In this video I share with you o 3 ways to make healthy breakfast cookies that are sugar free, made from whole food ingredients, easy, vegan and kid approved.

For the base recipe you'll need

6 banans (ripe and mashed) and 4-5 cups of oats

both old fashioned and quick oats work, but create different textures.

Here are the additional ingredients I added for the three different recipes:

Cinnamon Raisin
1 cup of raisins
1 tbsp cinnamon (or try Ceylon cinnamon)
1 cup almonds or nuts of your choice (walnut is great as well)

Nut & Date
1/2 cup nut butter of your choice (we love peanut or almond)
1 cup chopped dates (pitted!)
optional pinch of salt (gives this a little more flavor and a kind of caramel taste)

Strawberry Nut
1 cup freeze dried strawberries
1/2 - 1 cup nuts of your choice (we used almonds)
I think roasted nuts or almonds would be really nice here.
3-4 drops organic stevia leaf drops
(you could also use fresh vanilla and any sweetener of your choice such as maple syrup, honey if you are not vegan or agave nectar)

Bake the cookies at 425 degree F for about 20 minutes or until they start to get golden brown on the edges.

A bit of prep the night before then just mix and bake day of - our TOMATO CHICKEN PASTA BAKE is ready in just 45 minutes for a great go-to quick meal idea.

You are going to love many things about this recipe; it’s easy to prepare and really delicious too, perfect for when you’re pressed for time.

When it comes to easy pasta bakes, this TOMATO CHICKEN PASTA BAKE gets extra points because of its make-ahead process. All you need to do is prepare the ingredients the night before and store them in containers overnight. Next day, pack them up in the cooler and head off to your favourite weekend destination, aka the cottage. Once there, all you need to do is mix everything together, bake it and 45 minutes later, dinner is on the table. What could be easier, or tastier, than that!

You can have a delicious, easy-to-make, quick meal on the table in under an hour, and this recipe is it! Here are some simple points to consider when you go to make it:

The ingredients for this recipe - nothing too fancy, everything readily available, but as I detailed above, the trick is to prepare the ingredients in advance. When you’re ready to enjoy, simply mix them together and you’re good to go.

One thing to mention is that you can make a vegetarian version of this recipe by simply omitting the chicken and bacon. The finished dish will be a little saucier but it’s still tasty and wonderful.

Safe to say, pasta bakes would be nothing if it weren’t for the cheese. We decided to go the distance by including three - mozzarella to create a pleasantly gooey bake, and both Parmesan and cheddar to give the top a glorious crust with a bit of cheesy crunch. Yum!

Don’t you love when a meal can be served with nothing more than a sprinkle of parsley and Parmesan? This is especially great when you’re entertaining weekend guests. Remember, a casual relaxed vibe is an intention with pasta bake recipes, and this dish sure does fit that bill.

Since we’re keeping things casual, let’s echo those same sentiments with the rest of the meal. For me, salads are the way to go, whether you’re adding a scoop right next to the pasta or serving it on the side. If you like no fuss, try this SIMPLE SALAD, and if you’re all-in for a garlic lemon flavour next to tomato and cheese, try this CLASSIC CAESAR SALAD. Our SPINACH SALAD makes for a wonderful accompaniment too.

Relax! This TOMATO CHICKEN PASTA BAKE is dinner made easy, literally!

4 cups of dried penne pasta, cooked
3 cups of roasted chicken, cubed
½ of a sweet white onion, diced
4 ribs of celery, diced
¼ cup of sun-dried tomatoes, chopped
2 cloves of garlic, finely diced
6 strips of cooked bacon, chopped
3 cups of tomato sauce
1 cup of mozzarella cheese, grated
sprinkle of kosher salt
1 teaspoon of chili flakes (optional)
butter to grease casserole dish
1 cup of cheddar cheese, grated
½ cup of Parmesan cheese, grated
Sprinkle of fresh parsley, chopped
Sprinkle of Parmesan cheese, grated
1) Preheat oven to 350°F with the rack in the middle position. Lightly butter an 8 x 11-inch glass casserole dish and set aside.
2) Place the penne, chicken, onion, celery, sundried tomatoes, garlic, bacon and tomato sauce into a medium-sized bowl. Stir to combine. Taste then, season with salt. If using chili flakes, add them here.
3) Add the mozzarella cheese and stir all of the ingredients together until grated cheese is incorporated throughout. Transfer the mixture into the greased casserole dish, tamping it down gently.
4) Mix the cheddar and Parmesan together in a small bowl before sprinkling it out evenly across the top of the pasta dish. Transfer to the oven and bake for 45 minutes.
5) Garnish with parsley and Parmesan and serve immediately.

1 cup = 250 ml; Tbsp. = Tablespoon = 15 ml; tsp. = teaspoon = 5 ml; g = grams
500g Chicken
1 large Green Chilli
4 Garlic Cloves
1 tsp. Ginger
1 tsp. Red Chilli Powder
1 Tbsp. + 1 tsp. Chilli Vinegar
1 cup Onion Petals
¾ cup Capsicum
4 Tbsp. Plain Flour
2 Tbsp. + 1 tsp. Cornflour
1 Tbsp. + 1 tsp. Dark Soy Sauce
3 Tbsp. Tomato Sauce
2 Tbsp. Sweet Chilli Sauce
½ cup Spring Onion
1 Egg
1 ½ tsp. Green Chilli Sauce
1 Tbsp. Ginger / Garlic Paste
2 tsp. Sugar
Cooking Oil
Salt to Taste

Serves: 4 -6
Preparation Time: 30 mins

So kung sawa na kayo sa typical lunch meals niyo na rice and ulam, or if you are on a diet and counting calories, try these recipes out!
These dishes contain only around 300 to 400 calories which make for a balanced healthy diet.

Natikman na 'to ng iba at nagustuhan nila. Masarap siya, promise!

Ito yung mga ingredients ng bawat meal:

Adobong Kangkong with Tokwa
(good for 2)
1 bunch kangkong
1 cup tofu
2 garlic cloves
1 onion
1/2 cup oyster sauce
1/4 cup water
2 tbsp oil

Cream Dory with Corn and Avocado Salad (good for 1)
1 Cream Dory fish
salt and pepper to taste
3 calamansi (or 1 lemon)
1 corn on the cob (or 1/2 can of corn kernels)
1 medium avocado (150 g)
1 tomato
1/2 onion

Fajita Bacon Cheeseburger Crunch Wrap Recipe!

Macros for each Burger:
430 Cals, 37g Carbs, 14g Fat, 39g Protein!

Ingredients (makes 2 Crunchwrap Burgers):
2 Large Tortillas of your choice (mine were from Trader Joe’s)
10oz 96/4 Lean Ground Beef (Weighed Raw)
2 Slices Turkey Bacon (from Trader Joe’s
60g Trader Joe’s Reduced Guilt Guac
40g Low Fat Queso (Mine had 3g Fat per 30g serving)
28g Light Shredded Mozzarella
50g Green Peppers
50g White Onions
Sea Salt + Garlic Powder
Egg Whites for Egg Wash

1.) Preheat oven to 450 Degrees F. Take 10oz 96/4 Lean Ground Beef and season with Sea Salt + Garlic Powder and form into two 5oz burger patties.
2.) Preheat two pans. One for your burger and bacon. One for your peppers and onions. Both pans on a 6/10 heat.
3.) Thinly slice your green peppers and onions. Spray your pan with non stick cooking spray once preheated and add your peppers and onions to it. Add cover on top and cook till they are to soften.
4.) Spray your other pan with non stick cooking spray once preheated and add your burger patties and turkey bacon. Add cover on top and cook until your desired rareness/wellness.
5.) Now add some sea salt to your peppers/onions and add a couple splashes of water to them. This will help soften them even more and help caramelize without oil.
6.) Once all your ingredients are ready, lay down your tortilla and then add your ingredients in this order: Reduced Guilt Guac, Low Fat Queso, Light Shredded Mozzarella, Peppers/Onions, Turkey Bacon, Burger.
7.) Wrap Like Crunch Wrap like shown in the video.
8.) Add Egg White Wash on top
9.) Bake for 10 Minutes on 450 Degrees F. Then slice open and enjoy!

Buffalo Chicken Quesadilla Recipe!

Macros for the Whole Quesadilla:
441 Cals, 37g Carbs, 13g Fat, 44g Protein!

Ingredients for Each Quesadilla (makes 2):
2 Large Tortillas of your choice (mine were from Trader Joe’s)
10oz Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast (Weighed Raw)
90 Reduced Guilt Spinach and Kale Dip (from Trader Joe’s)
56g Light Shredded Mozzarella
Franks Buffalo Sauce
Sea Salt + Garlic Powder
Egg Whites for Egg Wash

1.) Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Preheat stove top pan to 6/10 heat. Take your 10oz Chicken Breast and season with sea salt and garlic powder.
2.) Spray stove top pan with non stick cooking spray and then add your chicken breast. Add cover on top of pan. Cook until sides are no longer pink and then flip over. Add a splash of water to help the chicken stay moist.
3.) Once chicken is done, shred with your hands into small pieces and add into a bowl. Then add your buffalo sauce and mix it all together.
4.) Now lay your tortilla down flat and add to one side of your tortilla 45g of your spinach and kale dip. Then your buffalo chicken. Then your cheese.
5.) Fold over the other side and press down. Add your egg wash and then add to the oven.
6.) Bake for 8-10 minutes until golden and then take out, slice up and enjoy those cheese pulls!
